In recent years we have specialized in filmic works about music.
In January 2024, we were able to record the outstanding ensemble piece “Nocturnal Migrants” (2023) by Madli Marje Gildemann for the Zurich University of the Arts. Lars Mlekusch directed the university ensemble for contemporary music Arc-en-Ciel, while Moritz Werner and Xaver Dienz were responsible for the ideal sound recording and mixing. Three manned and eight fixed cameras were sufficient to capture all the important solo passages. The aim of the editing was to emphasize the “cinematic”, sometimes demonic and mysterious character of the work.
Concert film with star pianist Hyung-ki Joo, conductor Pit Brosius and the Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg. With this project, Otwin Biernat and I wanted to prove that a professional, atmospheric orchestral concert film does not require a ten-person film crew with huge television cameras and conservative picture direction. The two of us studied the works, attended rehearsals in Miersch (Luxembourg), determined ideal locations for eight fixed cameras and our two main cameras. Sound engineer Ken Rischard read the scores during the recording and radioed the most important solo cues.
In two weeks of post-production, a film was created whose editing tempos and movements were very specifically matched to the respective musical character. The secret of the proper cut lies in microtiming. It is often necessary to work with frame precision in order to support the flow of the music and allow the audience to re-experience the concert organically.
Videography
Our partners are classical music festivals, event organizers, artists and recording studios. Our productions range from catchy 30-second teasers to in-depth interviews and mini-documentaries. The unbeatable thing about this form of communication is the opportunity to combine the sound experience directly with the personal statements of the protagonists. Music, language and images in rhythmic symbiosis speak to our audience more directly than any other format.
In fact, the process of editing a video has a lot in common with the process of composing music. At its best, a video about music ends up being not only informative and entertaining, but also musical.
